Client codes

Client codes are only issued to New Zealand entities (such as registered New Zealand companies). A client code is required as part of the import and export entry preparation and Customs clearance for shipments valued at NZ$1000 or more.

If you think you may already have a client code, get in touch with our National Contact Centre to confirm. You can also call 0800 428 786.

Apply for a client code

If you don't have a client code, your Customs broker can apply for this on your behalf, discuss this with your Customs broker, or you can apply for a client code yourself. To do this:

For more information, see import entry process.

Trade Single Window

If you're a business (i.e. a tax agent, freight forwarder, consolidator etc) and are assisting your customers in applying for client code, you are required to use Trade Single Window (TSW) and become a TSW User.

For further information on how to apply to be a TSW User, visit Registering to submit lodgments and registrations. Alternatively, you can approach a Customs broker to obtain a client code.

Client codes for private individuals

If you are a private individual importing or exporting for your own use, refer to the Customs Number page, which includes the application you'll need to complete.
